Record-breaking Volunteer Hours in 2009

January 5, 2010 by Madeha Khalid

Volunteers with The Riverwood Conservancy (TRC) have contributed a record-breaking 11,000 hours in 2009, a milestone for this local Mississauga charity.  Operating in Riverwood park, TRC provides the community with programs in environmental education, stewardship and gardening.  As every garden needs water, sunlight, and nutrients to help make it grow, the 575 volunteers of TRC have certainly contributed to this organization’s growth for the last 25 years.

According to Executive Director Douglas Markoff, “The many contributions of our volunteers are highly valued and appreciated.  Volunteers are integral to the delivery of our school and public nature and environmental education programs, stewardship of Riverwood and beautifying the eclectic gardens of Chappell House.  Volunteers support administration, special events, fund development, marketing and membership.  Volunteers serve as bird feeders, nature tour guides, program leaders, committee members, ambassadors and directors on our governing Board of Directors.  We are what we are because of our volunteers.”

Volunteers volunteer for various reasons:  to help support TRC programs and its mission, to stay active and healthy, to draw from their experiences and help mentor others, to learn new skills, to socialize, to “get their hands dirty” in the garden and to contribute to the community amongst others.

Volunteers are recruited from all walks of life, means and abilities and are provided with training and recognition.  TRC offers volunteer opportunities to suit many lifestyles:  from weekly to seasonal and from “as needed” to high school students fulfilling their community service hours during the summer.
